Pianist. Researcher. Educator

Artist Biography:

A Singaporean pianist, Xiaoyun Lim is known for her expressive artistry and refined musicality. She began piano lessons at the age of five and added violin studies at ten. Her early training was with Sylvia Tan and Boris Kraljevic at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, before continuing her musical journey abroad.

Xiaoyun has worked with internationally renowned pianists including John O’Conor, Yulianna Avdeeva, Noriko Ogawa, Leon McCawley, and Joanna MacGregor. She has performed across Melbourne and London, with highlights including a performance of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Winchester Chamber Orchestra.

Her academic credentials include a PhD in Music from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance under the guidance of Professor John Irving, Professor Katharine Ellis, and Dr Aleksander Szram. She holds a Master of Music from the Royal College of Music, where she studied with Andrew Ball, Dina Parakhina, and Patsy Toh, and a Bachelor of Music from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music under Igor Machlak.

Xiaoyun is dedicated to artistic exploration and continually seeks to broaden her musical horizons through performance, scholarship, and collaboration.

Research and Teaching

​Alongside performance, Xiaoyun is deeply committed to education and research. Between 2017-2019, she served as a lecturer at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, where she designed and taught music history and performance modules for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. A recognised educator, she is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK). During her doctoral studies, she also worked as a research assistant to Professor John Irving.

At just 26, Xiaoyun was invited by the Royal Northern College of Music to deliver the keynote address at their annual music research conference. Her talk, Haptic Analysis: An Alternative to Score-Based Analysis, highlighted her interest in bridging theory and embodied practice. She has also presented her research at respected forums including the Royal Musical Association (RMA) and Conservatoires UK (CUK) conferences.

As a teacher, Xiaoyun has mentored numerous young pianists, many of whom have gone on to win top prizes at international competitions. Her students consistently achieve Distinctions in ABRSM graded exams and Trinity College London diploma levels (ATCL and LTCL).

Now based in Singapore, Xiaoyun continues her work in teaching and research. She is currently a Lecturer in Music at the School of Music and the Arts (SOMA), where she is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of musicians and thinkers.
